WEEK AHEAD: Cruz, Lightfoot petitions head to court on Friday

The viability of the campaigns of Jose Cruz and John Lightfoot will be tested in court this week. Both men are waging a Democratic primary battle against powerhouse State Assembly incumbent David Gantt. A Gantt supporter, Ruth Brooks-Ward, filed challenges to Cruz’s and Lightfoot’s campaign petitions with the Monroe County Board of Elections and State Supreme Court. The petitions survived the board’s scrutiny, and the court case will be heard by Justice John Ark at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, August 10. Cruz is a member of the Rochester school board and recently stepped down as chief operating officer of Ibero-American Action League. Lightfoot is a Monroe County legislator and formerly sat on City Council. — Christine Carrie Fien
