School board will have ‘heart to heart’ with superintendent over Malgieri hire

Rochester school board member Van White says he plans to write to Superintendent Bolgen Vargas asking for a meeting with Patricia Malgieri, Vargas’ newly hired chief of staff.

White says he wants to clear up concerns he has over some of Malgieri’s past positions on the school district.

Vargas does not need the board’s approval to hire members of his senior team, but everyone needs to be able to work together, White says.

“He can pick who he wants,” says board president Malik Evans. “The superintendent is away on vacation, but the board will be having a heart to heart with him when he returns.”

Vargas’s decision to hire Malgieri, Rochester’s former deputy mayor, has angered some board members because she has been a critic of the district. And some board members question whether she can now be a credible advocate.

  1. Maybe the Skool Board can ask Jon Caufield how he stuffed Budget Bill in a BOX.

  2. “Heart to Heart”? Patty will have them on toast with jelly.

    Van,

You and your board have lost all creditbility anyway. So, I really don’t thinkk that you and your fellow board members need to have that heart to heart talk. As a so called lawyer it really suprises me that you of all people act as if you don’t know what the enviorment of which you helped caused has created. Van congradulations as long as you and those people are on the school board you will continue to be the laughing stock of the state education system. My name is Joe Smith so, you know who wrote this. Be blessed!

  4. WHAT’S MOST AMAZING ABOUT THIS WHOLE DEBACLE IS THAT THE BOARD DOES NOT SEEM TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE CRITICALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION OF WHETHER OR NOT MS. MALGIERI, WHO IS NOT AN EDUCATOR, AND HAS NO FORMAL TRAINING IN THE FIELD, AND HAS BEEN HIRED AT A DIZZYING SALARY OF $155,000 DOLLARS (PLUS BENEFITS) — $21, 186 DOLLARS MORE THAN THE MAYOR OF ROCHESTER MAKES, AND EVEN IF THE MILLIONAIRE MAYOR HAD NOT TURNED DOWN HIS RAISE — MALGIERI WOULD STILL BE MAKING $17,185 MORE THAN THE MAYOR — IS EVEN QUALIFIED FOR THIS SUPER-HIGH-PRICED POSITION??!! A-DAMN-MAZING!!!

    1. Walkthewalk1,

Can you name a school board member that DOES have an education background?????????????

Rochester city school district and the whole of Monroe county is run by crooks. All they care about is the all mighty dollar. This town is built on racism, cronyism, nepotism and B/S. If this Malgieri person is hired, the board and Vargas ought to be investigated.

  6. I love how people are trying to judge the administrative qualifications of someone who basically ran our city for 6 years. Before that she ran one of the most important public policy think tanks in the state and most recently ran the Hillside program which takes the most at risk children in our city and gets them to college. And they think she doesn’t support education? Where’s the logic here?

Mrs. Malgieri can hardly be chastised for her past critiques of the district. We have a staggeringly low graduation rate, horrible teachers cannot be fired, and there are so many layers of administration in central office that nobody knows who does what. I can’t think of any better person to clean up the mess than her.

Mr. White I’d love to see you go up against her in a discussion.

  7. this is NOT about qualifications. This is how Duffy gets to know what’s going on at the 1 place he could never get into.

  8. Yes, Steve, you must be right! It’s a vast conspiracy to give Bob Duffy all the juice on the city schools. Are you insinuating that he will use some sort of “inside info” to push mayoral control on a city he doesn’t even run anymore? Your theory has its screws loose.

Hurray Mark! Thank for injecting (oh my) reason into a discussion at City paper. Sometimes the foil helmet brigade and their endless conspiracy theories can be exhaustimg.
