CLUB NEWS: Friday morning meeting may determine Bug Jar’s fate

UPDATE(Friday, June 22): There is a meeting at 10 this morning at City Hall to help determine the fate of the Bug Jar. The meeting is between representatives of the Bug Jar, the Rochester Police Department, and the southeast Neighborhood Service Center.

In an interview yesterday afternoon, Mayor Tom Richards said that he wants a specific plan to prevent incidents like Monday’s fight and subsequent shooting from happening. Conditions could be put on the Bug Jar’s entertainment license, Richards said, and could cover issues like security, types of shows the Bug Jar can have, and maximum occupancy.

Monday’s incident has also been reported to the state Division of Alcohol and Beverage Control, Richards said.

Richards said he didn’t know how long the Bug Jar will stay closed.

ORIGINAL STORY:

According to the Democrat and Chronicle and other local media outlets, Monroe Avenue live-music venue/bar The Bug Jar has voluntarily closed its doors until at least Friday. The announcement comes after a man — Deavoughn D. Hernandez-Ruffin of Rochester — was fatally shot outside of the venue early Monday morning, following a fight that broke out at a show hosted by the club.

The venue will be closed until at least Friday, when owners will attend a Neighborhood Service Center meeting to discuss the future of the venue. Bug Jar’s owners declined to comment on the issue. City will have more information on the Bug Jar — one of Rochester’s most prominent live-music venues — as the story develops.

Note that the Animal Pants show scheduled for Thursday, June 21, at the Bug Jar has been cancelled. We will continue to post updates on the rescheduling or cancellation of other shows currently booked at the venue.
